BILL CUNNINGHAM NEW YORK

I moved to NYC nearly 8 months ago for the same reason most people do - to chase my dreams. More specifically, find my niche in this dynamic industry we call 'fashion' and achieve my full potential. Upon moving to this miraculous city, I have discovered it is the people who drive this industry, their unparalleled creativity and inimitable perspective of the world constructing the foundation of fashion.

One of my greatest inspirations is The New York Times street-style photography maven, Bill Cunningham. I had the pleasure of watching the documentary, Bill Cunningham New York, at Film Forum last night - a film that transcends Cunningham's focused fashion spreads in the city's most important newspaper, and delves into the spirit and very being of this extraordinary individual.

Cunningham is a living paradox riding a bicycle; respected by industry leaders such as Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and fashion icon Iris Apfel, this seemingly simple 83-year old man with not much more than a film camera, bicycle, and cobalt blue twill uniform jacket, exhibits a brilliant perception on the world of fashion and the power of street-style. Cunningham, who is overtly consumed  with clothing, the wearer, and documenting this harmony on the streets of New York City, is a force in the world of fashion that cannot be ignored.

If you are in NYC, I urge you to see Bill Cunningham New York - an illuminating portrait of a truly extraordinary individual who has remained a driving force in the fashion industry for over 50 years! (P.S: the DKNY popcorn bags sponsored by Donna Karan are too cute to pass up)!
"The wider world perceives fashion as a frivolity that should be done away with. The point is, that fashion is the armour to survive the reality of everyday life. I don't think that you could do away with it. It would be like doing away with civilization." - Bill Cunningham

  10. I've always noticed him in other street fashion blogs, do you know where he publishes his work? I keep denying to myself that this man does not warm my heart just at the mere sight of him. I've given in. I am so watching this documentary!
